Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
